Cheng Yu's Story

Cheng Yu, a Chinese junior student with hearing disability at University of Oregon, transferred from China in January 2016. Cheng had a hearing disability at his birth, and he could not hear any words no matter how loud the sound his mother made. As he grows, Cheng uses hearing aids and keeps practicing lip language to communicate with others, who do not have hearing disabilities.

Although Cheng is a student with hearing disability, he never gives up learning foreign languages and studying with other students, who do not have hearing difficulties. He always wants to show his positive identity to the public.

He changed his major to Psychology fall term 2016, because he finds interest in this subject, and he wants to know more about it. Although Psychology is difficult for him, he goes to the library at least four hours every day and spends the major part of that time on studying it.

Cheng Yu (left) and Ahmed Sarkz (right), a junior economics student from Libya, became classmates because of their math class. They usually study math homework together at least once a week at EMU, UO, and they think studying together saves time.

Ben Wiebe (left 1), Ahmed Sarkz (left 2), Cheng Yu (middle), Dave Foster (right 1), and Otton Lara (left 2) like studying together before the math exam at Allan Price Science Commons. “Sometimes you can learn more from your partners,” Cheng said.

Besides studying, Cheng at least goes to the supermarket at least twice a week, since he normally cooks at home. Cheng finds a new place, Dollar Tree, for shopping. “Everything just needs one dollar. I think I will come here very often,” Cheng said.

Cheng enjoys cooking. Although he eats alone for most of the time, Cheng won’t just have fast food. He usually cooks two or three dishes and enjoys them with online drama.

Cheng does yoga twice a week at home to release his stress from studying. He found the English language very hard, especially with a hearing disability when he first transferred to UO. Then, he started to practice Yoga, which makes him feel relaxed and sleep well.
